CNC Swiss Machining

Swiss style turning machines are similar to CNC lathes or turning centers, but are faster and more accurate than traditional CNC turning centers. This is because Swiss precision machining allows milling, drilling, turning and tapping to be accomplished on each Swiss turning machine. It's capable of producing high production rates in small parts (1.25” diameter and under) or delicate components that require tight tolerances.

Swiss CNC machining enables high volume production of extremely precise turned parts. Final machine parts are extremely accurate and conform to the strictest of tolerances. The most common run volume ranges from 10-250,00 pieces.

Swiss Machining

Swiss machining is especially effective in parts that are long and thin given the unique design allowing for the tooling to perform machining operations in a very close proximity to the supporting collet/guide bushing. Coupled with other unique attachments such as thread whirling many highly accurate, mass produced small parts can be produced easily.

We provide turned parts to a wide range of customers in a range of industries like Medical Devices, Aerospace, and Automotive. Produce quantities of swiss machined parts from the thousands to millions per year.

CNC Turning VS Swiss Turning

CNC turning methods are suitable for reliably producing parts in prototype to short volume production runs, CNC Swiss turning is more accommodating of thin and long parts, while conventional CNC turning is better for thick and short parts.

CNC Turning VS Swiss Turning
Conventional CNC Turning examples of parts including fluid controls, automotive ,castings
anything with a diameter larger than 1.5
better suited for short, large-diameter parts and larger parts with difficult materials
Swiss Type Turning examples of parts including shafts, watch parts, long medical devices and implant
a variety of connecting components for aerospace and electronics
great ideal for long parts and small-diameter parts under 1.25
produce complex precision parts with tight tolerances easily
great for the small runs from 1,000 pieces to high-volume production

Where is Swiss Machining Used?

CNC Swiss-style machining has the capability to machine longer, slender, and more complex parts with incredible accuracy, efficiency, and throughput. Parts produced by this type of machining are found in medical devices, optical equipment, firing pins, shafts,  connecting components for electronic devices and aerospace parts, and much more.

The technology is used widely in the medical industry where highly exacted standards are necessary for components such as surgical screws and tools.

But other industries besides the surgical tools and devices used in the medical field benefit from parts and components produced by Swiss machining like aerospace, computers and IT, electronics, energy and fuel systems, precision timing, and defense systems all rely on the advantages that this technique offers. Implants, shafts, contact pins, housings, inserts, and sockets are all commonly created via this type of machining

Benefits of Swiss Machining

The piece is held steady in the position near the operation point and not affected by the force of tools, the precision can be maintained in tight tolerance.

Often a single heavy cut can remove all the necessary material while avoiding deflection.

Small parts with complex profiles and configurations can be manufactured, including thin walls, deep cuts, and more intricate features.

Because the Swiss machine can perform multiple operations at once, the production speed is much higher than common lathes.

Secondary operations can be eliminated since the Swiss can mill, drill, ream, saw, and do many other operations. a shorter cycle of the production run.

Surface finish can be excellent eliminating the need for grinding.
